Ecdysis in crustaceans
Ecdysis is the moulting of the cuticle in many invertebrates of the clade Ecdysozoa. Since the cuticle of these animals typically forms a largely inelastic exoskeleton, it is shed during growth and a new, larger covering is formed. The remnants of the old, empty exoskeleton are called exuviae. WebDuring the ecdysis period, in the process of formation of the new exoskeleton, crustaceans absorb only a portion of the heavy metals present in the old exoskeleton and hemolymph for biomineralization of the new exoskeleton (Ahearn et al. 2004; Bergey and Weis 2007; Luquet 2012).
